S2 E2: Baile Funk

Collective Editorial

If Inspire by Sound had a heartbeat, this episode would be it. From the first pulse of Jarreau Vandal’s “Saturday Love (Vandalize Edit)” to the closing bounce of Pocah’s “Depois da Quarentena,” Season 2’s second mix moves. The duo steps straight into Rio’s heat, letting the basslines sweat and the drums command the floor.

“Clench your cheeks, this one’s pure movement.”

There’s no easing in here. “Saturday Love” opens like a flirt: neon-lit, smooth but restless. Vandal reworks the original groove with his signature percussion and syncopated breaks. It’s a reminder that Baile Funk doesn’t belong in the background; it’s built to be felt before it’s understood.

Then comes “Vem Vem” by Sango, a track that feels like the bridge between worlds, Seattle-crafted but Rio-born at its core. The percussion rattles like a motorcycle engine, and the vocal chops call you out onto the floor. Gerardo and Vic catch it instantly, trading reactions between laughs and head nods. This one sits in that perfect pocket between hip-hop and funk, the place where rhythm turns hypnotic.

By the time “Chicago” by Wntr ft. J.Robb drops, the vibe flips inward. The synths shimmer with melancholy, a late-night afterglow to all that motion.

“It’s crazy how funk can make you feel good and dance.”

Mix 2 tightens its grip on that energy. Luísa Sonza’s “Braba” kicks it off with pure self-possession, a declaration wrapped in drums. Then MC Dricka’s “Empurra Empurra” follows, fierce and unfiltered, turning empowerment into a chant. The chemistry between these two tracks feels intentional, a back-to-back statement that Baile Funk belongs equally to the women commanding it as to the crowd moving under it.

“Depois da Quarentena” by Pocah closes things out with humor and heart, a post-lockdown anthem soaked in joy and side-eye. It’s escapism with rhythm, pure release after the intensity of the set.

S2 E2 is a reminder that Inspire by Sound doesn’t showcase genres, it dives into how they live. Baile Funk isn’t just party music; it’s resilience disguised as rhythm, movement as message.
